Porter Sargent Handbooks Unveils New Resource in Discovering Private Education Options for Students with Special Needs

February 4, 2011

WESTFORD, Ma. – For the first time, families and parents of students with special needs now have a new resource to help them find the best private educational options for their children. The Guide to Private Special Education, published by Porter Sargent Handbooks, outlines educational programs for families and consultants looking to place elementary and secondary students with special needs in the most optimal learning environments.

Although private institutions aren't funded under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), in June of 2009 the Supreme Court ruled that parents of special-education students may seek government reimbursement for private school tuition, and more and more independent schools are working with special needs students to give them the finest education possible.

A follow-up to the highly regarded Directory for Exceptional Children, the Guide sharpens its focus to private schools to provide vital data on more than 450 day and residential programs across the country. Special-needs conditions addressed include ADD, ADHD, dyslexia and other learning disabilities, blindness and visual impairment, deafness and hearing impairment, deaf-blindness, emotional disturbances, intellectual disabilities (mental retardation), multiple disabilities, orthopedic/neurological impairments, autism and pervasive developmental disorder, speech/language impairments, substance abuse and traumatic brain injury.

Westford, Ma. – September 30, 2010 – The newest division of Alloy Education, Carnegie Communications, a leading higher education research, marketing and communications consulting firm, today unveiled a new logo and graphic identity to appear on all of the company's print and electronics materials. The new identity, designed to be part of the family of Alloy Education companies, was unveiled at Alloy Education's booth today during the opening of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) 2010 National Conference in St. Louis, Mo.

"Our new graphic treatment for Carnegie clearly communicates that we are dedicated partners with higher education," said Joe Moore, president and CEO of Alloy Education. "At the same time, we chose a bold, contemporary look to convey that we are now the most comprehensive marketing and communications firm serving colleges and universities."

Carnegie will continue to use its tagline, "Distinctions Made Visible," which Moore said is a perfect statement of Carnegie's core competency.

College Admissions Offices Shape Incoming Classes Using New Web Tools to Target "Stealth Applicants"

September 23, 2010

Alloy Education and Recrue Media partner to offer latest student recruitment technology

Westford, MA, September 23, 2010 – With college admissions offices under more pressure than ever to increase inquiries, applicants and matriculates, many are turning to new technology as a way to meet their enrollment management goals and even "shape" incoming classes.

Some tools, such as web "retargeting" or "remarketing," have been used effectively in retail marketing and are emerging as an ideal way to reach elusive prospective students who have visited college websites without registering their contact information. These so–called "stealth applicants" can account for as high as 60 percent of a college's applicant pool, according to a new study conducted by Carnegie Communications, a division of Alloy Education.

Alloy, which has studied the "stealth" issue extensively, has now teamed up with Recrue Media, the leading specialist in online retargeting, to offer this service to colleges and universities. Recrue claims the largest network of all retargeting companies, reaching 90 percent of Internet users in the U.S. The partnership has already attracted 40 schools into committing a portion of their marketing budgets to retargeting.

According to Recrue, the retargeting process begins upon visiting a college site, where a pixel is downloaded to the prospective student's computer. Acting as a beacon, the retargeting pixel is identified later when the individual travels to another website, displaying a banner ad from the college they visited. The banner ad then directs the prospective applicant to more information about the school, continuing a college's contact with the diverse array of students online today.

"Retargeting is the newest innovative component of a college's online marketing plan," says Joe Moore, President & CEO of Alloy Education. "Often, 95 percent of the visitors to a college's site will leave without taking action. Retargeting brings those visitors back to the school and the results tell the story. Click–through rates on college sites using retargeting are triple the average, and the conversion rate to student applications has never been higher."

Steven Bogue, Principal and Digital Operations Director for Recrue Media, adds, "Retargeting works for one simple reason: The people that visit your site are the people most interested in you. Retargeting allows a marketer to target an interested audience with a frequency level online marketers could not previously achieve."

Specifically, online retargeting allows universities to deliver banner ads specific to the interests of the individual student. "For instance," Bogue says, "if a student visits the college's business school website, they will see banner advertising related only to the business school, and not for programs irrelevant to their interest."

Alloy's Moore points out that colleges and universities are looking for the most cost–effective ways to recruit students. "With the tightening of budgets at every college and university today, it is imperative that admissions offices use tools that are more surgically targeted to their prospective customers. Many are finding that marketing budgets allocated to things like highway billboards in the past are much better spent on tools like web re–targeting," he says.

Alloy Education Launches New Website for Searching Private and Independent Schools

September 20, 2010

Westford, MA, September 20, 2010 – Students, parents and school guidance counselors can use a variety of reference books to gather data on private schools. Now, they can also go online for a single source of in–depth and comparative information about private and independent schools nationwide.

The new site, PrivateSchoolSearch.com, is being launched by Alloy Education, a leading provider of targeted media and promotional programs for education clients.

The online database is the most comprehensive of its kind, based on information compiled in the Porter Sargent Handbook Series' Handbook of Private Schools.

First published in 1915, the Handbook is a printed database of annually updated private school facts. Now online, the site makes it easier than ever for users to match students to a school, whether it's preschool for a toddler or an elite secondary school.

"We are excited to introduce this valuable and convenient new resource for anyone interested in private school education," said Alloy Education's Vice President of Print, Meghan Dalesandro. "The Handbook data information is like no other forum allowing parents, advisors and educators to readily compare the most independently compiled data and make the most appropriate choices for students."

With just over 1,700 primary and secondary schools available, the detailed search function allows users to narrow their search by location, grades offered, size of enrollment, genders or even residential boarding programs. Featured schools supplement their basic listing with photos, a detailed description and an in–depth profile covering administration and faculty credentials, academic and athletic offerings, tuition and financial aid, test scores, graduate placements and more.

Porter Sargent Handbooks also publishes the Guide to Summer Camps and Summer Schools, The Directory for Exceptional Children and Schools Abroad of Interest to Americans. In 2007, Porter Sargent Handbooks joined forces with Alloy Education via Wintergreen Orchard House, a major database compiler and provider, specializing in the college, graduate and scholarship fields.

School administrators looking to update their Private School Search listing, or to add their school to our database, email updates@portersargent.com.
